Presidential 2017: Getting Out of the Confusion

Latest News

The confusion, some even speak of a rout, is significant in this presidential campaign. Letโ€™s skip over the right, forced by the logic of the primaries, to support a candidate whose ethics we now know were merely virtual.

The Emmanuel Macron phenomenon, for its part, illustrates that in politics, anything is possible. The support of Bayrou is quite logical, while that of Robert Hue marks a pitiful end of a career. The support of Bertrand Delanoรซ and Patrick Braouzec raises questions.

Today, taking advantage of this confusion each day, the ideas of the far-right are infiltrating our society. In the remaining days of the campaign, the danger is that we allow the debate to be stolen by the endless twists of the Fillon affair and the opportunistic rallying to Macron.

All this overshadows the stakes of 2017. The future of social protection, the need for democratic renewal, the role of work, tax reform, the question of Europe or the development of public services, not to mention the ecological transition or the fight against financeโ€ฆ for now, all of this is far from dominating the headlines.

And yet, if we do not bring these issues into the public debate, especially with those who, disappointed or weary, have decided to swell the ranks of the abstainers, the ideas of the far-right will continue to thrive.

There is urgency to engage in the battle of ideas, to launch a campaign to emerge from this lethal confusion.
