School: Return to the Four-Day Week

Latest News

A busy city council meeting took place yesterday in Nice. Among the 191 deliberations on the agenda, the measure concerning the school schedule was adopted amidst disagreement.

A subject dear to the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, the return to the four-day week for schoolchildren in Nice is expected to be implemented by the next school year.

The opposition, led by Patrick Allemand, however, expressed reservations about the rush of such a measure, which, according to the socialist official, should be postponed by a year to “rework the school week plan.”

Recent studies on learning in schools could support the opposition’s argument since it’s proven that children are in better conditions to learn in the morning, as the peak of attention occurs before noon.

The four-day week involves heavier days for schoolchildren, with more working hours on school days, yet not necessarily more productive.

The primary beneficiaries of this measure will be the teachers, with one less working day per week, although with denser working days.

Christian Estrosi hopes that the associative sector will also be positively impacted by this change because, according to the Mayor of Nice, “recovering Wednesday is important to redevelop associative extracurricular activities, which are essential for the development of our children.”
