After encouraging figures in recent months, the unemployment curve has reversed again, both nationally and locally.
A few weeks after his election as President of the Republic, and in the midst of a project to reform the Labor Law, Emmanuel Macron already faces a rise in unemployment in France.
While the increase is noticeable, it remains clear that gradually reducing the number of job seekers in France is one of the major challenges of the new president’s term.
Across the French metropolitan territory, the number of job seekers increased by 0.6% in May 2017 (an additional 22,300 unemployed people), according to data published by Pรดle Emploi this week.
Regarding the Alpes-Maritimes department, the rise recorded in May is 0.7%, slightly above the national average.
More than 100,000 people (including all categories of unemployed) are seeking employment within the department.
It remains to be seen whether these figures will strengthen the government’s resolve to reform labor laws, or even accelerate this overhaul process.
