This Monday, June 3, a press conference was held on animal welfare and ritual slaughter. As Eid approaches, the increase in sheep slaughter is concerning Henry-Jean Servat and Jean Moucheboeuf. Here’s what you need to know.
In 2023, 40 sheep were found in a 12m2 social apartment in a deplorable state. Despite a partnership signed between the prefecture and a number of Muslim associations to ensure this is done with respect for animal welfare, things are not going well. Furthermore, an additional aggravating factor this year is that no agreement was reached. This is an alarming situation as Eid approaches, when it will traditionally be celebrated. Either by slaughter by throat slitting without respect for the animal or basic hygiene rules.
United despite differences on the political spectrum
Despite political differences, they find themselves 100% aligned when it comes to the animal cause. Although Henry-Jean Servat clearly requests that animals not be slaughtered. He is aware that absolute perfection cannot be achieved. The main thing is to have slaughter methods that minimize suffering for the animal. Their demands? “The abolition of exemptions granted to religions on ritual slaughter, hence the respect of French laws“, they mention. They also ask that religion adapts by incorporating “prior stunning“. A way to prevent the animal from suffering while respecting their religious doctrine. In their view, it would be a possible evolution.
A cause taken seriously
So, two weeks before Eid, they are requesting additional monitoring of sheep breeding to prevent breeders from selling “anarchically” to individuals or companies that would not follow the rules: without veterinary agreement, without traceability. They seek additional specific control accompanied by stricter penalties for any offenders. “People need to know clearly that if they are caught with a sheep in their bathtub, bedroom, or car, sanctions will be very strong“, insists Jean Moucheboeuf. No animosity toward religion, just a desire to respect animals. Finally, they have approached the prefect to convey their demands, reminding them of European rules and emphasizing measures to be implemented concerning animal welfare.
