The Charles Nรจgre Photography Museum hosts the Vivian Maier Anthology exhibition until March 2025, featuring her photographs and story.
The Charles Nรจgre Photography Museum has included an exhibition on Vivian Maier since October 2024. This exhibition retraces the colossal photographic work of this Chicago nanny. The museum also offers a screening room presenting the documentary: Finding Vivian Maier. No fewer than 140 images and videos are on display in this Anthology exhibition.
Vivian Maier and Her Work
V. Maier took her photos in a self-taught manner, capturing what she saw. The exhibition spaces present photographs by themes such as color or street scenes. This exhibition allows us to dive into the 1950s (and subsequent decades) and the American society of that time. We find images that can be perceived as the artist’s anecdotes. She often used herself as a subject in many photographs, playing with her shadow and longitude, as well as with reflections in shop windows, mirrors, etc. These images span her entire body of work and let us see through her eye and perception of a moment.
Organization of the Exhibition
A whole section of the museum is dedicated to her color photographs. There is a series on childhood, a constant theme in her work. A series on portraits, some candid, others with the consent of the subjects. Finally, there is a section on self-portraits and another on street scenes. All of her photographs possess varied framing, subject to her vision, and a form of practicality and photographic balance.
