A loud explosion occurred on Monday, June 29, 2026, around 9 p.m., on Rue Révérend-Père-Louis-Frolla in Monaco. The incident took place in a residential building located on the border with France.
Initial findings by Monaco’s Public Security indicate that a man was filmed by surveillance cameras depositing a backpack in front of the building’s entrance before leaving the scene. Other evidence suggests the deposit of two bags. Moments later, an explosion occurred as several people were entering the building. The suspect then fled on foot toward Beausoleil.
Around 10 p.m., the Monégasque government announced a toll of three injured, two of them in critical condition. According to French police, the victims are reportedly of Ukrainian and Russian nationality. A government spokesperson from the Principality indicated that the explosion would have been caused by a “malicious act.”
Red plan activated and reinforcements from Alpes-Maritimes
Faced with the situation, all competent services were mobilized. According to several sources, the red plan was activated. This is a pre-established action strategy for a sudden event resulting in or potentially resulting in numerous casualties. This allows for a gradual increase in resources depending on the number of victims.
Five vehicles and fourteen firefighters from Alpes-Maritimes were also sent as reinforcements. Teams arrived on site around 10:15 p.m., according to the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Fire and Rescue Service.
On the social network X, the mayor of Nice, Éric Ciotti, reacted by referring to the “attack committed,” described as a “tragedy.” The mayor of Nice also expressed his “Thoughts for the victims, their families and the Monégasque people. Total support for the security forces and rescue services mobilized.”
Nice city councilor Julien Picot also reacted: “It is with deep emotion that we learned of the terrible explosion that occurred tonight in Monaco, which has plunged several members of the same family into a situation of absolute emergency. On behalf of the French Communist Party of Alpes-Maritimes, I extend all my support, my most sincere thoughts and all my solidarity to the victims, their loved ones and to all those affected by this tragedy. We also extend our wishes for recovery to the injured and hope they will be able to overcome this terrible ordeal. We wish to commend the courage and professionalism of firefighters, medical teams, security forces and all personnel mobilized to assist the victims and secure the scene. As the exact circumstances of this explosion are the subject of an investigation, it is essential to allow justice and investigators to establish the facts. In these difficult times, unity, solidarity and respect for the victims must prevail.”
The investigation continues to apprehend the suspect who may have been arrested near the border toward Beausoleil. In the meantime, residents of Monaco and neighboring municipalities are being asked to remain in their homes.
