Crowned French champions after a final victory against Paris Basketball, AS Monaco Basket will experience a turbulent summer. Relegation to the EuroCup, a consequence of the club’s financial difficulties, is leading to the departure of several key players, including Matthew Strazel. Mike James, Élie Okobo and Alpha Diallo are expected to follow.
Just days after winning a new French championship title, AS Monaco Basket faces a very different situation. Despite a domestic quadruple, the Principality club enters a period of uncertainty marked by a profound restructuring of its squad.
The Betclic Élite season concluded with a thrilling final. Monaco reclaimed the French championship title by winning game 5 on the Paris Basketball court. This success launched an anticipated offseason, with several matters already on the table concerning the future of the squad. The sporting situation was quickly overtaken by the club’s economic difficulties.
A relegation to EuroCup that accelerates departures
AS Monaco was officially relegated to the EuroCup for next season. The club still hoped to retain its place in EuroLeague by providing financial guarantees after an initial decision by the Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA), made on June 12. The organizers of European competitions ultimately confirmed the relegation.
This decision ends five consecutive seasons in EuroLeague. During this period, Monaco participated in the playoffs each year and reached the competition final last season against Fenerbahçe.
Besiktas now replaces the Monegasque club in EuroLeague. Paris Basketball, reinstated thanks to a one-year wild card, and ASVEL will continue to represent French basketball in the competition. Monaco will compete in the EuroCup alongside JL Bourg and Le Mans.
The EuroCup commitment spans five seasons. Monegasque managers, however, wish to return to EuroLeague by 2027 thanks to the arrival of new investors. A fourth hearing before the Monegasque court of first instance is scheduled for July 10 to clarify the club’s future.
Matthew Strazel first to leave, other key players expected to follow
The sporting consequences are already visible. Matthew Strazel has become the first player to officially leave the Principality. The French international point guard has signed with Efes Istanbul for two seasons, plus one optional year.
At 23 years old, Matthew Strazel will discover a third club after ASVEL and Monaco. The Olympic vice-champion with France at the Paris 2024 Games joins another EuroLeague club, which already features Frenchmen Rodrigue Beaubois and Isaïa Cordinier.
This departure should only be the first of many. Mike James, Élie Okobo, Alpha Diallo and Daniel Theis are also announced to be leaving.
The core group that enabled Monaco to establish itself among Europe’s best teams will thus disperse after four seasons. This generation is leaving the Principality on a final French championship title and a domestic quadruple, as the club now attempts to ensure financial stability and prepare for a rebuild.
