Christian Estrosi and Philippe Pradal were present at the rehabilitation site of the Gare du Sud in Nice, located in the Libération district.
A great opportunity to revisit an ambitious project combining History and urban planning.
Built in 1892 by Prosper Bobin, who also created the Gare du Nord in Paris, the “traveler’s building” was the starting point for lines that complemented the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée network, heading west to Grasse and north to Dignes, Grenoble, and Geneva. The station was in operation until 1991, after which it was decommissioned and transferred.
With a total cost of 110 million euros, financed by the city of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis, the Gare du Sud is set to receive a new lease on life. Since January 2014, the former “traveler’s building” has housed the Raoul Mille media library. This first step sets the tone for the renewal of this emblematic district: to perpetuate its lively, cultural, and commercial tradition in a new built and landscaped environment, ensuring respect for the environment and local businesses.
Connected by tram line 1, the Chemins de Fer de Provence line, and with easy access by car or on foot, the district will host new housing, a student residence, a sports complex, green spaces, shops and stalls, and an underground parking lot with 770 spaces, 93 of which are reserved for market farmers. The project further energizes the Libération market by bringing in prospects. The district, a certain catchment area, already has over 10,000 residents.
The entire development is expected to be delivered around December 2018.
