With a sculptural entrance and plush carpeting, the Park Inn hotel makes an impression. It was in this subdued atmosphere that RNCA presented its new recruit to regional media: the South African Rudi Dames. Transfers between the Côte d’Azur and the Southern Hemisphere are definitely in vogue. RC Toulon had indeed already started this trend in October by recruiting the very charismatic Black Tana Umaga. RCNA simply followed suit.
For a gazelle (Springbok), Rudi Dames is a fine one. The man immediately impresses with his build: broad shoulders, bull neck, and Schwarzenegger-like jaw. Barely affected by the fifteen-hour flight from Durban to Nice via Frankfurt, the Afrikaner explains his choice: “I like the project in Nice. The idea of building a long-term team is ambitious. I like it.”
The sturdy fellow is not entirely new. Rudi Dames had made a brief appearance in France in the previous season, specifically in Millau in Fédérale 1. Playing this year for the Collegians of Durban, he was part of the Natal Sharks team during the last Currie Cup. The ultimate recognition for a player, the South African coach had called him up in 2000 to play in the Under-19 Rugby World Cup. Quite a calling card!
An excellent kicker
The scrum-half was welcomed upon his arrival by the entire staff of the Nice club: Christian Baldacchino (club director), Philippe Buchet, Paul-Henri Safayan, as well as Julien Schramm (in charge of communication). The latter is full of praise for the technical qualities of his new player and specifies: “Rudi has an excellent left foot. He can kick long, up to fifty meters, and that with a success rate of 88%.” And adds: “He is not only useful in attack. He is also an excellent tackler.” The player is in sync with his remarks and knows that the expectations surrounding his arrival are high: “I am expected for my kicking game. I hope to quickly reach a 90% success rate on this point.”
His kicking talent, recognized by all, will indeed be heavily relied upon. In addition to bringing his technical skills and enthusiasm to the team, Rudi will also be officiating at the club’s rugby school. His kicking expertise will undoubtedly be invaluable to future Nice rugby players.
Currently on a six-month contract, with a possible one-year extension, the “bok” could play as early as this weekend. We just have to wait for the Committee’s decision on his eligibility. In case of a favorable opinion, see you in Sorgues to discover a player who is sure to make a noticeable entry. The South African gazelle has not finished running.
