Francine Boillot’s students, lecturers in Information and Communication Sciences at Nice Sophia Antipolis, gathered on Wednesday as part of the Sustainable Development Week to present their project. Public participation was at the heart of this initiative, because even though sustainable development is reaching a media peak during election times, the concept remains debatable. Francine Boillot explains, “[sustainable development] rethinks a new mode of development that prioritizes the quality of life today and tomorrow.” “We must continue to be vigilant,” she asserts after two decades of research in this field.
But vigilance was present and this day reminded us of it. Booths on selective sorting and fair trade warmly informed students and passing visitors, through scenarios, guides, and detailed explanations about the dangers and possible solutions to protect our planet today and sustainably. More than just an ecological identity where protection dominates, sustainable development is distinguished by three fundamental pillars, as Cécile, a student of this Master’s degree, explains: “sustainable development acts on economic, environmental, and social factors,” “We need to change our behaviors.” Strong in this principle, Wednesday’s day made an effort, besides the booths, to involve the public, thanks to a Forum Theatre that grouped four situations from daily life.
Pascal Guyot from the company Entr’act organized these short plays and invited participants, in a warm and relaxed atmosphere, to seek and stage solutions to avoid daily pollution. These four themes addressed the problems of waste, energy consumption, noise nuisances, and the reluctance to use carpooling. Léa, Rémi, Antoine, and Christophe, participated in the games, in a generally good mood. There’s nothing better to get the message across.
Better than a long speech, the scenarios helped highlight one’s own faults, because as much in Nice as in all cities around the world, sustainable development, in general opinion, has a long way to go.
