The Cannes Festival is not the only film festival in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur that takes place in May.

On April 28th, the In&Out Cinema Meetings in Nice launched the 14th Queer Film Festival. For 9 days, screenings and conferences are organized in various places around the city of Nice: Le Belmondo Cinema, Nice Cinematheque, The Dojo, The Bookstore, Les Parleuses, Vigna Bookstore, The Chicken Coop, and at Villa Arson.

The festival started this Thursday at 5 PM with the retrospective screening of a 2009 Franco-Portuguese film: To Die Like a Man by João Pedro Rodrigues.
The feature film for 2 hours and 13 minutes portrays the life of Tónia (Fernando Santos), a star of drag shows in Lisbon. Aging and sick, she faces the arrival of younger artists and her lover Rosáio’s (Alexander David) heroin addiction.

Following the film, the opening ceremony introduced the festival’s program and organization. The evening continued with a master class led by film critic Jean-Sébastien Chauvin, the director of the screened film João Pedro Rodrigues, and his partner João Rui Guerra da Mata, exploring human desire and issues of “identity, gender, and species.”

The festival will continue until May 7 with discussions and 40 screenings, including 8 premieres across 6 festival venues.
