The duty to ensure the education of refugee children

Latest News

The primary responsibility of the National Education is to guarantee each child’s right to schooling.

45,000 non-native speaking students are already enrolled in school in France. In the Aix-Marseille and Nice academies, in 2014-2015, the CASNAV (Academic Centers for the schooling of newly arrived non-native speaking students and children from itinerant and traveler families) respectively enrolled 2,745 and 1,900 non-native speaking students.

Approximately 10,000 young refugees of school age are expected in France within the next two years. The academies in the PACA region are expected to welcome between 800 and 1,000 of them.

The CASNAV of these two academies are already mobilized to identify each young personโ€™s educational level and schooling needs in various levels of education. The educational teams thus have the experience and expertise necessary to facilitate the integration of these young people into our school system. They develop appropriate support from their arrival and integrate them into a regular curriculum as soon as possible.

Higher education institutions are also involved in this effort to allow refugee students to continue their studies based on the diplomas and qualifications obtained in their home countries.

Finally, the mobilization is also aimed at parents. The national program “Opening the school to parents for the success of children” will be increased by 2,500 places in the coming weeks. It aims to enable these parents to learn the French language (understand, speak, read and write), discover the functioning and expectations of the school regarding students and parents, and embrace the values of the Republic.

Within this mobilization framework, the Aix-Marseille and Nice academies will work closely with state services, local authorities, and all school partners to ensure the best conditions for reception.
