Lionel Bringuier, the hometown hero, returns to his roots: where it all began…
At 18, he was a winner of the Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors before being appointed, the following year, as assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2012, he became the music director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. He will conduct his first concert at the Opéra de Nice on Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2.
Under his baton, the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra will begin the program with the famous Prélude to the Afternoon of a Faun by Claude Debussy.
Then, the prodigious cellist Edgar Moreau will take the stage to perform Camille Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1. Unlike tradition, this concerto has no orchestral introduction: the solo instrument bursts in with a swirling theme.
After this virtuosic piece, the concert will conclude with Symphony No. 2 in E minor (opus 27) by Sergei Rachmaninoff: the most ambitious orchestral work by the Russian composer.
