By parodying the Marquis de Lafayette, Emmanuel Macron might exclaim: Frenchmen, here I am.
At 39 years old, the En marche! candidate becomes the youngest president of the Fifth Republic, an unlikely hypothesis just a year ago.
According to an Ipsos-Sopra Steria estimate for France Télévisions, Radio France, and Le Monde, the En marche! candidate garners 65.5%, against the National Front candidate, who collects 34.5%.
While the National Front has broken its record for votes received, suggesting a significant entry of its candidates into the National Assembly in the next legislature, it must also be noted that Emmanuel Macron decisively defeated Marine Le Pen, with a score that exceeded expectations.
A “new chapter” is beginning, reacted Emmanuel Macron, hoping it will be one of “renewed hope and confidence.”
Who would have bet a few months ago on this ambitious young man setting out to seize supreme power in a country that seemed only to adhere to codes, rules, formalities, and traditions?
Left-right, partitocracy, experience: Emmanuel Macron overturned everything to claim the scepter. France now has a president who claims to be of the left and the right, without an established party.
Who says the French don’t like change? Perhaps, it’s just a matter of asking them the right questions…
