On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Franco-German Élysée Treaty, Rudy Salles, Deputy Delegate for International Relations representing Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor, President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, and Benoît Kandel, First Deputy Mayor of Nice, will welcome a delegation from Nuremberg on Friday, January 25, at 5 p.m. at the Mediterranean University Center.

This meeting will be an opportunity to honor the Nice-Nuremberg twinning, whose 60th anniversary will be celebrated in Nice as part of a year labeled “Nice-Nuremberg Year” (October 2013-October 2014) with the organization of various events.

On this occasion, Rudy Salles expressed himself as follows:

“This week we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, which cemented Franco-German friendship. This anniversary is full of symbols. Indeed, France and Germany were for a very long time two countries that regularly went to war against each other. These conflicts set Europe ablaze and in mourning, affecting millions of families.

Now France and Germany have become the strongest allies in the world. European construction rests on this united and essential tandem. No one would consider turning back today.

This is the anniversary we are celebrating this week. To mark this unique fiftieth anniversary, the National Assembly and the Bundestag met in Berlin for joint working sessions as well as commemorations.

I welcome this understanding, which Europe needs so much. In a troubled world, undergoing full transformation, and laden with concerns, it is reassuring to see that two old enemies have succeeded in building a friendship as solid as a rock. It is an example that should inspire the many states that today are at war.”
