A second smoke-free beach for the city of Nice

Latest News

After the Centenaire beach, Lenval beach, a symbolic site opposite the children’s hospital, has been chosen to be the second one. The Nice coastline thus has two ideally located beaches: one in the center and the other to the west of Nice. This initiative is part of the “Nice, City without Tobacco” project.

Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice and President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, has made public health a key aspect of his political commitment, particularly in the fight against cancer with the implementation of the “Cancer Plan” and strong actions in prevention, screening, and care.

Naturally, the city of Nice collaborated with the National League Against Cancer to obtain the “Smoke-Free Beach” label, which is an extension of the national “Smoke-Free Space” label created by the League following the Cancer Plan.

A municipal decree was issued on April 30, 2013, prohibiting smoking on the Centenaire and Lenval sites, with penalties for violations, on the beach and in the water up to a distance of 300 meters, every day of the week, from 9 AM to 8 PM, from April 12 to October 31.

New additions for 2013 on the two smoke-free beaches include:

– New signage with a new visual, more signs, and poles at the beach entrances;
– Installation of ashtrays decorated with the beach visual at the top of the stairs leading to the Centenaire and Lenval beaches;
– Distribution of informational brochures by the heatwave prevention brigade this summer on the beaches, available to the public at the lifeguard stations, at the two accessible beaches, and at the “learn to swim” site;
– Organization of activities by volunteers from the National League Against Cancer during the summer to raise public awareness about the dangers of tobacco.

The 2012 report? Only 6 tickets were issued to offenders who did not cease the infraction.
