The 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61), which will be held from March 13 to 24 at the United Nations headquarters, will discuss “women’s economic empowerment in a changing world of work.”
The world of work is evolving, with huge consequences for women. On one hand, technological advancements and globalization present unprecedented opportunities for those who have access to them. On the other hand, job informality, income inequality, and humanitarian crises continue to rise.
In this context, only 50 percent of women of working age are part of the global workforce compared to 76 percent of men. Moreover, a very large majority of women work in the informal economy, subsidized care, and domestic tasks, engaging in low-paid and low-skilled activities with little to no social protection.
Gender equality in the world of work is an imperative for sustainable development.
The celebration organized by the United Nations on March 8 reminded all stakeholders to take a step towards gender equality for a 50-50 world by 2030, ensuring that the world of work includes all women.
