The elected municipal officials of the city of Nice met this morning to decide on long-awaited measures. New developments should be implemented in the coming months.
“The party is over for you!”, retorted Eric Ciotti at the opening of the municipal council to Anthony Borré, a member of the former majority, who regretted the high price of tickets to see singer Sting (€90) at the Nice Jazz Festival which will take place from July 23-25. The tone is set from the outset for the Municipal Council of June 5. The municipality will not subsidize the festival to make tickets more affordable, thereby favoring the taxpayer at the expense of the user, in line with the spirit claimed by the Ciottiste group (UDR). One of the first changes introduced by the new municipal team.
Paid parking regulations on public roads will change
From September 1, 2026, the rules for paid parking on public roads will change. Specifically, paid parking procedures will undergo three major changes:
- The shift to two hours of free parking per vehicle per day, compared to one hour previously
- The paid parking time period is reduced by one hour: it will now run from 9 am to 7 pm instead of 9 am to 8 pm
- Parking rates will be standardized: a single rate schedule will be applied from Monday to Saturday
This measure, a flagship promise of Eric Ciotti’s campaign, aims to “respond to the needs of merchants and to the mobility needs of residents”, according to municipal councilor Laurent Merengone. Opposition councilor Juliette Chesnel-Le Roux (EELV) points out for her part the “false good idea of the week”, fearing that this measure will encourage “all cars” and produce, under the guise of free parking, the opposite effect of what was intended. She also denounces a “populist decision that would favor polluting transportation.”
Increase in municipal police compensation
Security, “the first concern of citizens” for Mayor Eric Ciotti, is the subject of a measure validated unanimously. This involves strengthening the financial attractiveness of the municipal police by increasing their compensation. The budget allocated to municipal police officers will be brought to the “maximum statutory level”, declares Françoise Souliman, first deputy mayor.
The municipality also proposes to “fight against a major obstacle to recruiting municipal police officers: housing”. To do this, the municipality will mobilize the municipal housing stock by allocating temporary housing to staff wishing to join Nice’s municipal police.
Communist municipal councilor Julien Picot wishes to “avoid any instrumentalization regarding the municipal police”, recalling that the latter does not have the authority to intervene in matters such as drug trafficking.
New police stations
“A police station will open in Saint-Roch”, a neighborhood where reinforced police presence is desired, announced Mayor Eric Ciotti today. He also identified the future premises of this station yesterday during the day.
The Alpes-Maritimes department will contribute to financing the new Police Headquarters on rue Delille, currently under construction, in the amount of 10 million euros.
A statue in tribute to Nice resistance fighter Max Barel will be erected in his namesake square
A request formulated by the French Communist Party, jointly with the República de Nissa association, for more than twenty years. Max Barel, Nice communist resistance fighter, who died under torture by Klaus Barbie in 1944, will see a monument erected in the square bearing his name in the Port neighborhood.
The launch of this project to create a monument in his honor was adopted unanimously, “a beautiful gesture for the memory and future of our city”, notes the mayor.
The latter also committed himself to municipal councilor Julien Picot to pay tribute free of “political considerations” to this figure of Nice resistance: “This must be a moment of unity and solidarity.”
