Three deaths were recorded, while the number of seriously injured decreased slightly. The data highlights a high exposure of motorized two-wheeler users since the beginning of the year.
The report distributed by the departmental road safety observatory showed an increase in the number of deaths in August 2026. Three people lost their lives, compared to two in August 2025, according to provisional data transmitted by internal security forces. The number of seriously injured decreased slightly, with thirty-nine victims compared to forty the previous year.
Over the first eight months of the year, the trend remained downward. Twenty-four deaths were recorded between January and August, compared to thirty-three over the same period in 2025. Motorized two-wheeler users occupied a central place in this report. Thirteen deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year, more than half of the victims. The departmental road safety observatory of the Alpes-Maritimes clarifies that « motorized two-wheelers constitute the most affected category, with 13 deaths. »
Pedestrians accounted for five deaths since January, compared to nine in 2025. Car drivers totaled four, compared to seven the previous year. Cyclists recorded two deaths, down from five victims in 2025. August confirmed mortality concentrated among users aged 25 to 64, with three deaths compared to one in August 2025.
Motorized two-wheelers particularly affected
Two fatal accidents occurred in urban areas and one outside urban areas. The time slot 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. concentrated all deaths in the month, which highlighted increased exposure during periods of heavy traffic.
The prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes also announced a decrease in license suspensions. Three hundred and fourteen orders were issued in August 2026, compared to three hundred and ninety in August 2025. This change came one year after the revision of the scale, now stricter for provisional license holders.
The awareness program continues in October, with several actions conducted in partnership with the gendarmerie and local stakeholders. A session dedicated to motorized two-wheeler trajectories is planned in Nice, followed by participation in the regional road safety day at the Luc circuit and an intervention at the Mayors’ Convention.
