Acting Against Racism, Ciné-Café of Nice, the Victor Hugo Circle, and Friends of Democracy are organizing a screening around Tate Taylor’s film.
Made by a group of friends (director, screenwriters, and actors), this film, long rejected by production companies, achieved immense success after an editorial triumph (Kathryn Stockett’s novel sold 5 million copies).
Inspired by real events, the story paints a picture of a bygone era, that of militant racial discrimination in the Southern States.
Contempt, condescension, injustices, and discriminations were then the daily reality for black populations, particularly colored domestics, both integrated into the lives of white families and kept at a distance in the name of racial prejudice.
