A citizens’ march for refugees will take place in Nice this Saturday, September 12, as part of a European support movement to affirm the solidarity of Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes with those refugees fleeing war, violence, and destitution, often at the risk of their lives, and to remind people of the need to provide these refugees with a dignified welcome.
It will also be an opportunity to recall Articles 13 and 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which guarantee everyone’s freedom of movement and the right to seek asylum in a country other than their own.
The procession will depart from the Thรฉรขtre de Verdure at 3 PM towards the Monument aux Morts.
The first political endorsement of this initiative comes from the Communist Party through its departmental secretary, Cรฉcile Dumas:
“Faced with reality, faced with the tragedies that refugees experience as they flee war, chaos, and destitution, the first emergency is solidarity and the duty to welcome.
The Alpes-Maritimes department must show its solidarity and capacity for welcoming by opening places to accommodate refugees, setting up medical and social support arrangements, and providing professional integration and education paths for children.
It’s uncertain whether this call will be heard in the upper echelons…
@ECiotti – September 7
We are waiting for concrete solutions from the Minister of the Interior, not cosmetic dressing of a situation he does not control.
Local authorities did not wait for the left and its moral lessons to welcome refugees, they have already been doing their part.
In September 2014, we welcomed a Christian refugee family from Iraq in the 06 with @lionnelluca06.

I am very committed to the right of asylum in our country. But other countries must also practice it, like the Gulf countries.
