You love it? You think you know it? It is threatened.
โA sea in the middle of the lands.โ Mediterranean. A lovely term that will give its name to this splendid stretch of about 2.5 million kmยฒ, situated between Europe, Africa, and Asia… The Mediterranean Sea reveals its secrets at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, starting November 20, 2010.
Fragile. Its biodiversity is in danger. Through this event-exhibition, “Mediterranean” raises awareness of the phenomena we all witness but are not always aware of. Four current topics will be highlighted in a captivating manner, so that young and old can understand the reasons for the proliferation of jellyfish, ocean acidification, species coming from elsewhere, or the threat to the bluefin tuna.
“Mediterranean” aims to engage the public and provide the keys for involvement through simple actions. Get involved so that it remains a vibrant sea!
Art and science, appointments not to be missed
Come see the jellyfish dance. With its century-old expertise in the field of aquariology, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco has chosen to illustrate the proliferation of jellyfish by presenting a ballet of Aurelia aurita within an aquarium designed specifically for the occasion.
Experience the thrill with the mysterious guest “Wu Zei”
With “Mediterranean,” the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco continues its openness to contemporary art. The unprecedented work created on request of the Museum, by the world-renowned Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping, creates surprise and wonder. Welcoming the visitor, this impressive hybrid animal, akin to an octopus, spans the ceiling of the hall of honor with its 25 meters of wingspan and its 8 tentacles spanning the space.
