The risk of forest fires reaches a very severe level in the Estérel-Tanneron massif on Wednesday, July 1st. This classification results in the closure of the site for the entire day.
Access to the massif is prohibited. Circulation and work are also prohibited until the end of the day. This measure concerns only the Estérel-Tanneron massif. The other forest massifs in the Alpes-Maritimes remain accessible.
A few hours after these restrictions came into effect, a vegetation fire broke out in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, in the immediate vicinity of a residential area. A large column of smoke quickly became visible in the area.
About sixty firefighters mobilized
The alert was raised shortly before noon. Firefighters from the Alpes-Maritimes deployed significant ground resources, supported by a water-bombing helicopter. At 1:20 PM, the fire was contained.
In total, 64 firefighters and 28 vehicles were mobilized for this operation. The average corniche of the Pugets was closed to traffic by the municipal police in order to facilitate the work of emergency services.
The Departmental Fire and Rescue Service requests that people strictly avoid the area so as not to hinder operations.
Faced with the risk of forest fires, authorities remind of several safety rules. No fires should be lit near wooded areas. Cigarette butts should not be thrown from a vehicle. Access restrictions must be respected. In case of fire, alert must be given immediately by calling 18 or 112 after precisely locating the fire.
The authorities finally remind that nine out of ten fires are of human origin and call on everyone to adopt the right reflexes in order to protect the forests of the Alpes-Maritimes.
