“When the tale is told in jazz”

Latest News

An orchestra gathered at the Mediterranean University Center to reinterpret the Grimm Brothers’ “Hansel and Gretel” in a jazz version. An experience enjoyed by most children.

The city of Nice is organizing performances of the famous tale “Hansel and Gretel” by the Grimm Brothers, adapted into a jazz version by Julien Martineau, accompanist at the Nice Conservatory. Since January, more than 4,000 students from Nice have attended the interpretation of 21 traditional nursery rhymes, transformed into jazz standards by the Inter-Direction Big Band of the City of Nice, under the direction of Romain Mussault, chief of the Municipal Guard Music. The orchestra, composed of 12 musicians and a narrator, hails from various orchestras and municipal services, including the Nice Conservatory and the Municipal Guard Music.

A Remarkable Experience

Olivier Baert, coordinator of the theater department of the city of Nice, is responsible for narrating this story. According to him, it is a fun way to introduce children to this kind of practice: “It’s an experience that is both enjoyable and allows schoolchildren to appreciate tales in a different way.” Manon Zimmerman, a teacher at Simone Veil School, accompanies her fifth-grade class to this event. “We just came out, and the children seem quite satisfied. It’s a very good initiative, worth repeating!”

Other performances will take place during the week. Join us tomorrow at 2:30 PM at the Conservatory, for the greatest delight of the schoolchildren.
