Created 22 years ago by Handicap International, the Shoe Pyramids have, over time, become an annual event for mobilization against anti-personnel mines and, since 2003, against cluster munitions (CM).
This Saturday, at Place Masséna (from 10 am to 6 pm), the 23rd Shoe Pyramid will once again serve as a reminder to newly elected political leaders of their responsibilities.
They have helped gather more than 2 million petition signatures to pressure states and achieve the ban of these weapons that kill and maim innocents. The success is unequivocal: for the first time in the history of international humanitarian law, two treaties ban conventional weapons.
Today, true to its advocacy mission and in the face of repeated bombings against civilians, Handicap International is rallying to end the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. Aleppo, Mosul, Sanaa, every day 90 civilians fall victim to these weapons worldwide. A denial of International Humanitarian Law, lives shattered under the guise of “the fortunes of war.”
To put an end to impunity, Handicap International intends to pressure states and gather 1 million signatures by September 2018.
