A municipal police station has reopened in Old Nice. Located at 8 cours Saleya, this reception point is accompanied by the creation of a festive brigade composed of 14 municipal police officers. The measure is intended to strengthen the presence of law enforcement in the most frequented sectors during the summer.
The municipal police have made their return to cours Saleya. Last weekend, the mayor of Nice, Éric Ciotti, inaugurated a municipal police station located at 8 cours Saleya, in premises that had been closed for several years.
Open every day in summer from 8:30 a.m. to midnight, this station is intended to strengthen the presence of officers in Old Nice and improve the handling of the public in one of the most frequented sectors of the city.
This reopening is accompanied by the creation of a festive brigade composed of fourteen municipal police officers. This new unit is tasked with ensuring an increased presence in the field, particularly during peak hours and at the exit of nighttime establishments. “We are fully engaged in a proximity policing approach so that people can come see us until midnight,” explains Jérôme Marcenac, director of Nice’s municipal police.
The station may also serve as a place of refuge for people present on cours Saleya.
Enhanced patrols in the city center
The festive brigade officers will conduct patrols in several sectors of the city center, notably at Place Masséna, on the Quai des États-Unis and in the pedestrian zone. The objective is to prevent nuisances, incivility and violence that may occur during bar and nightclub exits or during summer evenings.
“We are witnessing a rise in violence and alcohol-related behavior in the summer. This brigade is at the heart of my plan to restore order in Nice,” declared Éric Ciotti.
The new unit will also support firefighters during certain rescue operations. However, no specialized unit has been created within the station to handle gender-based and sexual violence. Victims may nonetheless be received before being referred to the competent services of the national police. “Municipal police do not have the capacity to conduct investigations. But here, victims will be able to be received and be immediately linked with the national police. So that will also be one of the objectives,” added the mayor of Nice.
The festive brigade will be able to rely on the national police during the summer season. A reinforcement deemed useful as the population present in Nice increases significantly during the summer months. Since Éric Ciotti took office last March, this is the second municipal police station to open its doors in Nice. In May, following the shooting in the Moulins district, a first branch had been inaugurated.
